With age, thinning of hair does occur. But there are many other causes as well which result in premature hair loss, it includes hormonal factors, medical conditions and medications.

Hormonal factors:

Most common cause of loosing hair is hereditary one. This is called as male-pattern baldness and female-pattern baldness. In certain people they acquire this problem of hair loss as a genetic one. Certain sex hormones that are responsible for particular pattern of hair loss can be transferred from one generation to another.

This hormonal loosing of hair is more common in men and they can start loosing hair as early as puberty.

Hormonal imbalances during pregnancy, childbirth in women can also lead to hair loss. But this is temporary and can be treated. Discontinuation of birth control pills and the onset of menopause also lead to hair fall.

Medical conditions

Sometimes medical conditions can also leads to shedding of hair:

Thyroid problems:

Thyroid gland maintains hormone levels in our body. Disturbance in hormonal level causes hair fall and this can be due to improper working of thyroid gland.

Alopecia Areata:

Alopecia acreata is a disease that occurs when immune system attacks hair follicles. This leads to round patches on head and shedding of hair.

Scalp Infections:

Scalp infections like ringworm can also lead to hair loss. But these infections are curable and once treated, hair generally grows back.

Other Skin Disorders:

Lichen planus and some types of lupus are few diseases that can result in permanent hair loss.

Medications:

Many a time hair loss also occur during treatment or medication:

Diseases like Cancer, Arthritis, Depression, Heart problems and High blood pressure involve intense treatment and high dose medicine whose after-effect results in hair loss.

Other causes of hair loss: Besides these factors there are some other reasons that can lead to hair loss in human.People some time experience thinning of hair after going through a physical or emotional shock like excessive weight loss, high fever or a death in family.

People undergoing mental illness have an irresistible urge to pull out their hair. If the hairs are pulled from scalp it leaves bald spots on the head that are permanent.

Hair loss can also occur due to certain hairstyles that pull hair too tightly.
